Fagernes; utstilling og turer med hundene

Fagernes; dog show and hikes with the dogs

på vei mot Fagernes /on the road to Fagernes

The 1st of May we went to Fagernes to the Norwegian Polar Dog Club show the 2nd of May. At the same time we decided to spend a couple of days extra to go on some hikes in the surrounding area. We stayed at Bjørkestølen Camping, about 20km from Fagernes, and up in the mountains. A really nice place to stay.

Dogs that needed a shower is showered and the car is packed and ready for depature.

Fremme på Bjørkestølen. /We have arrived at Bjørkestølen

After getting some of our stuff out of the car and into the cabin we went for a walk in the area surrounding Bjørkestølen with the dogs. This evening it was a short hike for about 3km with all the dogs at once.

Orca, Såga, Gaia, Denali, Fjellbris, Freke, Stjerne (bak Freke)

After the hike, it was evening. We ate som dinner and had som entertainment from the TV and the lap top

Sa mye fint, men synes bare to av mine nådde helt opp denne dagen. De  fikk allikevel fine kritikker av ham.

Saturday the 2nd of May it was time for the dog show. The judge was a completely uknown one to me. A French one named Christian Leneuf. He was nice with the dogs. Said a lot of good things about them, but didn't think two of mine was top notch this day. All got a nice critique from him.

Stjerne: Excellent expression, nice skull, good eyes, well set neck, good back, excellent chest for age. Good bone, good feet, good angulations, excellent coat, good movement, good reach, strong drive for this age. Very feminine.
BIR-valp / BOB-puppy

Orca: Good eyes, well sett ears, well set neck, good proportions, good back, excellent angulations and bone, excellent coat, good movement for the age.

After the showing of our own dogs, we spent time watching the judgement of the Greenland dogs. It was fun to see this many dog of this breed at the same time. I usually only see a few on most dog shows. Since we watched all the Greenland dogs in the ring, this gave Stjerne enough time to calm down and relax.

It wasn't all that warm this day, and snow in the air. Even Truls found it to be a bit chilly. Good to have a dog as a warm blanket :)

Stjerne endte til slutt opp som BIS2 valp. Gruppe/BIS dommer var Klaus Strack fra Tyskland
Stjerne ended up as BIS2 puppy. Group/BIS judge was Klaus Strack from Germany.

When the entire dog show was finished, Klaus - who are living with the breeder of Freke and Denali, came to the car to say hi to the dogs. Denali really appreciated the extra attention, and it seemed like Klaus thought it was fun to see her again. It is soon 6 years ago Denali left Germany as a 8 week old puppy.

He met Freke earlier in the day. However he has seen Freke a few times after he moved to my place 4 years ago as he has been to dog shows in Austria and Germany.

Sunday the 3rd of May we went with the Polar Dog Club on a hike. They arrange a backpacking test for Samoyed and Greenland dogs. Our dogs did not carry a backpack this day, but very nice of them to let us in on the hike. Nice people. The hike went about 5km uphills, and then down again.
Truls had an aching knee so we ended up a bit behind the other on the way down. This turned into a little detour of our own. Making our hike even a little bit longer.

Snart ferdig med turen. / Right before the end of the hike

We were ment to stay another night and take another hike on Monday. However as the weather forcast said rain, a perhaps snow in the altitude we were located, we figured out it was better to return home Sunday night and take another trip to Fagernes another time. The car had summer tires on, and ice cold rain is not the best hiking weather.

  3. Hi Sarah,
Thank you for finding my dogs beautiful. I've had Siberian Huskies for more than 21 years now. What got me into the breed is the fact that I was looking for a dog which would be good for outdoors activities no matter what weather and it need to tolerate a Norwegian winter with no problems. In addition I wanted a medium size dog that was gentle towards humans and other dogs. And the fact that they have a fairly high prey drive didn't matter to me as I keep my dogs on leash or inside a well fenced area.
